Date: April 27, 2008 Location: Dry Tortugas National Park (Florida) Country: United States Comments: Fort Jefferson – more than 16 million bricks strong – rises from a small island in the Gulf of Mexico. Construction on the fort began in 1846, and at its peak the structure bustled with almost 2,000 people. Today the fort enjoys a much quieter existence as part of Dry Tortugas National Park, approximately 70 miles west of Key West, FL. |
