Date: June 11, 2003 Location: Konza Prairie (Kansas) Country: United States Comments: Also referred to as Purple Coneflower or simply Echinacea, this plant is a well-known prairie specimen. Its root has a known numbing effect that was utilized centuries ago by Native Americans. This plant is now commonly touted as an ingredient in supplements meant to stimulate the immune system. Due in part to these medicinal uses, it has been overcollected in some portions of the United States. The Konza Prairie has a large, healthy population that is absolutely gorgeous throughout much of June. |
